Shawn Groth, MD
Dr. Groth is a thoracic surgeon at the Baylor School of Medicine and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas. His practice includes the multi-disciplinary management of benign and malignant disorders of the esophagus/foregut, lung, pleural space, mediastinum, chest wall, and diaphragm, including malignant pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer.
In addition to other aspects of his thoracic surgery practice, Dr. Groth is Director of Esophageal Surgical Services and co-directs a newly created swallow center, which provides a multi-disciplinary approach to managing patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal motility disorders. He provides minimally invasive approaches to managing benign (e.g., gastroesophageal reflux disease, paraesophageal hernias, achalasia, benign strictures, and esophageal diverticuli) and malignant foregut disorders (e.g., malignant strictures and esophageal and gastroesophageal junction cancers), as well as Barrett’s esophagus.[1]
Dr. Groth is an expert in advanced endoscopy, including per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for achalasia and robotic thoracic surgery. He teaches these techniques to practicing surgeons around the country. His ultimate goal is to provide high-quality, patient-centered treatment using advanced minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.
Education and Career
Dr. Groth attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree. He earned his medical degree at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, where he also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the School of Public Health and then completed an internship and residency in General Surgery. He completed an additional residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he studied under Dr. David J. Sugarbaker, and then completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center under the mentorship of Dr. James D. Luketich.[1]

Dr. Groth is a published researcher who has presented his work at numerous national society meetings, including The American College of Surgeons, The American College of Chest Physicians, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and The American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple major medical journals.
His clinical research focuses on thoracic oncology clinical trials and health services research on identifying health care disparities and improving the quality of care.
