Irene Epelboym Rossmer, MD
Dr. Irene Epelboym Rossmer is a surgeon and surgical oncologist with the Atlantic Medical Group, practicing as part of the Atlantic Health System. She specializes in the management of complex solid organ malignancies including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, for which she applies her surgical skills using a complex procedure called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) that combines cytoreductive surgery with administration of a heated solution of concentrated chemotherapy drugs.
Dr. Rossmer’s other professional interests include minimally invasive cancer surgery, robotic surgery, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, bile duct cancer, pancreatic cancer gallbladder cancer, liver cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, cutaneous (skin) surgical oncology, small bowel cancer, appendiceal cancer, carcinoid tumors, colon cancer, rectal cancer, anal cancer, breast cancer, sarcoma, adrenal cancer, and other advanced malignancies.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Rossmer attended Columbia University as an undergraduate and earned her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She returned to Columbia University to complete an internship and residency in General Surgery as well as a research fellowship. During her final year there she was selected by her peers and the faculty to serve as the chief resident at Columbia University Medical Center campus of the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She was also awarded the Blakemore Award for an outstanding body of research performed during residency. Following this experience, Dr. Rossmer completed a highly competitive fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.[1]
Professional Activities and Memberships
Dr. Rossmer is actively involved in numerous medical societies and organizations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the John Jones Surgical Society. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.[1]
Research
Dr. Rossmer’s research focuses on improving outcomes of surgeries for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, skin, soft tissue, and breast. She has been actively involved in many clinical trials and has authored articles that have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed publications and her research has been presented at multiple regional and national meetings.
