Bela Kis, MD, PhD
Dr. Bela Kis is an interventional radiologist, the Section Head of Interventional Radiology, and Vice Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. He is also an Associate Professor of Oncologic Sciences at the University of South Florida. In his role, he treats patients diagnosed with a wide range of challenging cancers, including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Kis’ clinical interests include image-guided tumor therapy including transcatheter chemo- and radio-embolizations; minimally invasive percutaneous tumor ablation (NanoKnife, cryo- and radiofrequency ablation)z; image-guided biopsies; image-guided urinary and biliary interventions; arterial and venous stenting; uterine fibroid embolization; pelvic congestion syndrome; vertebroplasty; and kyphoplasty.[1]
Dr. Kis recently introduced thyroid radiofrequency ablation (RFA) at Moffitt Cancer Center, making it one of the very few programs to offer this treatment in the United States.
Education and Career
Dr. Kis earned his medical degree and PhD from the University of Szeged in Hungary. He completed an internship in Surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health and a residency in Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where he also served as Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in Interventional Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.[1]
Research
Dr. Kis’ research focuses on new techniques in minimally invasive, image-guided tumor therapy. He has examined the effectiveness of chemoperfusion treatment of mesothelioma, irreversible electroporation (Nanoknife) treatment of unresectable pancreatic cancer, radioembolization treatment for primary and metastatic liver tumors, and partial splenic embolization to increase platelet count in patients with thrombocytopenia.[1]
