Joshua Winer, MD
Dr. Joshua Winer is a surgical oncologist at Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta. He is a leader in the field and one of the few surgeons in the state of Georgia who performs cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), a procedure that has made a significant difference for patients diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Winer earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care.
In pursuit of excellence in cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC procedures, he then pursued a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which has one of the leading HIPEC programs in the country.[1]
Since completing his medical education, Dr. Winer has been working as a surgical oncologist at the Emory Winship Cancer Institute. He also works at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Decatur and Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sandy Springs.[2]
Dr. Winer is also an associate professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology, Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr. Winer specializes in treating abdominal cancers, including peritoneal mesothelioma, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and colon cancer. He is an expert in HIPEC treatment.
Dr. Winer performs around 100 surgeries a year for these types of cancers, and says that HIPEC requires patience: all visible tumor material must be removed for the delivery of the heated chemotherapy solution to be effective.[2]
